How We Plan Prevention

The Strategic Prevention Framework is a five-step, data-driven process that helps communities identify and address substance use problems effectively.

Rather than jumping to solutions, we assess what's happening in Somers, build capacity, plan evidence-based strategies, implement programs, and evaluate results. This approach is circular  we revisit steps as community needs evolve, ensuring our prevention efforts stay current and effective.

  • Vaping

Vaping is the second most commonly used substance for Somers teens, exposing them to nicotine, cannabis, and toxic chemicals that harm their health. Some think it’s safe, but vaping damages lungs and the brain just like cigarettes.

To keep our kids safe, we’re implementing the New Healthy Futures education program and continuing youth-led programming to address risks & responsibilities.

  • Prescription Drugs

While prescription drug misuse is less common in Somers, even one incident can be dangerous or lethal. Many believe “if it’s prescribed, it must be safe,” but medications are only safe for the person and condition prescribed.

We’re hosting Drug Take Back days, distributing safe storage lock boxes, and sharing disposal information to make everyone aware of risks & responsibilities.

  • Alcohol

Many Somers youth access alcohol through peers & parents, making it our most commonly used substance. While some parents think supervised underage drinking is safer, it’s actually unsafe, illegal, and increases long-term risks.

We’re developing social host law campaigns, alcohol education, and community events to remind everyone about risks & responsibilities.

  • Cannabis

Since cannabis became legal in CT, more teens see it as no big deal, while parents may not realize how strong today’s products are or how easy they are to consume. Using before age 25 can affect brain growth, memory, and learning.

By sharing facts we’re revealing trends, educating, and addressing impaired driving to bring critical attention to risks & responsibilities.

  • Mental Health

Many Somers students face anxiety and depression, and some report suicidal thoughts or plans. We’ve all heard “talking about suicide puts the idea in someone’s head,” but asking directly is protective and can save lives.

We offer QPR training, youth-led activities, and connections to counseling & crisis resources to build a community that recognizes risks & responsibilities.

Holiday Reminder for Parents
Allowing underage drinking on your property can have serious legal consequences under Connecticut law.

This law still applies even if:

  • The adults / homeowners were not home at the time
  • You believed supervised drinking was the safer option
  • You did not purchase or provide the alcohol

Knowing the law helps keep our youth and everyone in our community safe this holiday season.
